Example of Bon Odori in Tokyo 2025

Bon Odori is a traditional Japanese folk dance, performed around the time of Obon (mid-August) originally to honor ancestral spirits who are believed to return to visit their living relatives. Today, it is mostly enjoyed as a joyful community celebration. During Bon Odori people form a circle around a central yagura (a wooden bandstand) and dance together in synchronized movements usually accompanied by the sounds of taiko drums. Each region has its own folk songs or ondos, which dancers follow. These days contemporary J-pop and other popular music is also used.

We organise a Japanese Bon Odori Festival "DoDon Ga Don" in Amsterdam on 20th June 2026! ☀️ The festival will include Japanese food, drinks, market, and of course, Bon Odori.

As most Bon Odori events have a group of experienced dancers who perform in the center, we are looking for people who would like to join this team of lead dancers! 🫵💕 Other participants follow their movements, making the lead dancers an essential part of the celebration.
No experience? Don’t worry, the dances are quite simple and easy! We plan to meet every other Saturday at 15:30 - 17:30 at ISO Amsterdam where we have been given permission to practice.
